Welcome to the last full week of 2nd grade. I can't believe we are finally here. The students have grown so much, learned so much and experienced so much. We have one more week of fun and excitement in 2nd grade. I look forward to spending every minute with them!
The talent show is this week! I have arranged our lineup and the kids are excited to perform. The show will begin at 2:00pm in the Parish Hall. We would love for you to join us!

Tracking Binders: Tracking binders were emptied out and 3rd trimester work was sent home. These binders will be passed on to 3rd grade to allow students to continue to track their work until they have access to gradelink in 4th grade!
SRA- We have finished up SRA in the classroom. Expect a packet home this week with your child's work. There is also a letter more clearly explaining the program, how it is utilized in 2nd grade as well as what you can work on with your child over the summer!
Art Portfolios & Writing Portfolios- These will come home over the course of the week. Look out for all of their amazing work. The writing portfolios are always my favorite. It's amazing to see how much they have grown throughout the year!

Great job at the Variety Show 2nd Grade! The students worked so hard on their song and I couldn't be more proud. They did a fabulous job. I hope all of you were able to enjoy the show, it was definitely one for the books!
We are on our final countdown in 2nd grade! The balloons have gone up, and we are enjoying our final 12 days in 2nd grade. Each day the student with the corresponding number gets to pop their balloon and reveal a fun activity for the class. Today, Anthony popped balloon # 12 and kicked off our final countdown with a dance party. Looking forward to a fun end of the year!

Throughout the month of May, grades 1, 2 and 3 pray a decade of the rosary each morning for the students, families and faculty of St. James Academy. This beautiful tradition honors Mary for all that she has done and asks her to pray for us and to bring our prayers to her Son, Jesus. Know that we are praying for you as the students learn more about the rosary, it's mysteries and the blessings and graces which come from praying it.

What a beautiful Palm Sunday we had yesterday to enter us into this Holy Week. I pray this week that we are able to focus on the journey to the cross and unite more closely with Jesus through it. What a beautiful reminder of Christ's love for us. May we find small and big ways to love through sacrifice, just as Jesus taught us to do.
Poetry Cafe is THIS WEDNESDAY. All are welcome to join us for our poetry presentations. They will be held in the 2nd grade classroom from 8:30am-9:30am. Students will be reading the original poems they have written throughout the month of April!
Belmont Park Ditch Day- Please make sure to get your permission slips in to me this week so that we are prepared to go when we return from Easter break!
First Communion is the Sunday after we return from break (May 5th) at 11:30am. I will be sending home seating arrangements for the mass on Friday, the 3rd. Please arrive around 11:00 to get your seat. I will be gathering the children in the back social room to prepare for their procession. This week in Lent, we are focusing on Christ's suffering and death. In order to unite more closely to him during this, we will be doing an all school Stations of the Cross workout. This will take place on Thursday from 1:15-2:45. Students will meet on the blacktop and divide into their school families. Students should wear comfortable footwear on this day. They can also wear spirit wear for the day or, if they choose, free March Madness attire for $1.00 in support of 8th grade graduation. Feel free to join us for this activity. If you come, please help us keep a reverent atmosphere, as the stations workout will be done in silence.
Great job again on your animal reports. Thanks to the parents who came to watch the presentations. You can find the reports at the link below:radcliffesclass.weebly.com/2018-2019.html. You can also find them under my projects tab on my website! Feel free to share with family and friends. I am so proud of their hard work!
Students are making their career projects this week in class! Thank to to Mrs. Hoorvath and Mrs. Roper for coming in last week to talk about your jobs. The students loved having you. We look forward to having Mr. Brzezinski and Mrs. Mullen in this week.
Rock the School has been postponed. The new date is Monday April 8th @ 7:00p.m. Please join us in the parish hall.
In preparation for First Communion and as tradition during Lent, 2nd grade will begin our Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe read aloud. This book beautifully illustrates Christ's death and Resurrection. The book is not a 2nd grade book however, so as I read I will be changing words or leaving parts out. Many children want to read it on their owns or watch the movie. This is a choice you can make as a parent, however, please know that what they are reading in here is modified for their age! I will show a few slices from the movie at the end. In total, there will be about 6 scenes that are about 5 minutes each. I have hand picked them!
Chapter 6 in the First Communion books was due today! Make sure to keep up on your at home study! I pray that it is going well, if you need anything, do not hesitate to reach out!
Literature Circles-Students are finishing up their Book Study projects this week by making an iMovie. Look for them to come home in the near future!
Holy Thursday Retreat- Our Holy Thursday retreat is on April 18th. Thank you so much to the Roper family for volunteering to bring in juice boxes for K-3 (about 50 and Mrs. Wilson for dating 3 loaves of bread. We are still looking for someone to donate a gluten free loaf. If you are able to bring in one please let me know. Thanks!

Welcome to our third week of Lent. This week in Lent we are focusing on almsgiving. Each year in partnership with Catholic Relief Services we raise money in our Rice Bowl Initiative- www.crsricebowl.org/. Instead of sending these home this year, SJA is holding a COIN WARS next week. Each class is encouraged to bring in silver coins to earn points for their class. Students can bring in dollars to give negative points to other classes. 1 dollar equals 10 points, 5 dollars equal 50 points, 10 dollars equal 100 points and 20 dollars equals 200 points, ect. All of the money raised will go directly to CRS. Please help us raise money for such an amazing organization.
Our Zoo Field trip was amazing. I am so thankful to the San Diego Zoo for putting on such an amazing class about adaptations and life-cycles. The students had an amazing time and I loved watching their excitement seeing all of their animals in real life. Thank you to our amazing chaperones who went and made the day that much more special for the kids!
Our animal reports are done and up in the hall. Please check them out. The students spent so much time researching, writing, illustrating and publishing these reports. I couldn't be more proud of their dedication, discipline and hard work. They turned out amazing and I know they are excited to share them with you. Each year I have the students transform their books into digital iBooks where they read their stories aloud to you. We will be presenting these THIS Thursday at 2:00pm in the classroom if you would like to join us. If you are unable to come or would like to share them with your families, I will send out a link next week. We look forward to sharing these with you!
Career Week is this week! Thank you to Mrs. Roper for volunteering to come in and share about your career with us. If any other parents would like to come in to share some information about their jobs with the students we would love to have you. Please let me know what days and times work for you and we will work around your schedule. The students truly enjoy listening and learning about what you do! Next week students will be making their career reports in class. If you did not send in your cereal box last week, please send them in ASAP so we can get the wrapped before they begin. Thank you!

I'm excited to allow them to work independently on this new project. It is important that students are in class as they are part of a group!

As Lent continues, let us focus our minds and hearts on Christ's love and sacrifice. How can we unite more closely to Him through His suffering? What crosses in our lives do we carry? Though these crosses seem difficult to carry through our daily lives, let us reflect upon Christ, who carried His cross. Simon of Cyrene is picked from the crowd to help Jesus along the way. Who in our lives is helping us to carry our crosses?
Career week is next week- Students will be learning about various jobs and how people work and make a living. During this week parents are welcome to come in and share with the students about their own jobs. If you would like to come in, please e-mail me to set up a time! During this time students will be learning about various careers and researching them. They will complete a Career Week project. Please send in a cereal box by next Monday for this project!

This week in our Lenten Journey, 2nd grade will be praying the Stations of the Cross with 8th grade. The stations are up in the adoration garden again if you haven't had a change to look. Next week we will focus on alms-giving. We will be holding Coin Wars, similar to our previously done penny wars. All silver coins will count as 1 point and students can "bomb with dollars". 1 dollar will equal 10 points, 10 dollars will equal 100 points, ect. All coins collected will be given to Catholic Relief Services. (This will be in place of sending home our early rice bowls). The class who receives the most points at the end wins. I'm confident 2nd grade can do it!
The following week students will participate in a Stations of the Cross workout. Feel free to join us, it's a very beautiful/special part of our Lenten Journey. We meet out on the blacktop to begin!

This Thursday we will head to the Zoo for our field trip! Right now the weather calls for rain. Please make sure your child dresses accordingly (they should be in uniform but can wear a rain jacket or sweater!).We will be leaving the classroom around 8:30 to get the program on time. We will depart the Zoo at 2:00pm getting back in time for dismissal. Feel free to send in sunscreen or a hat if the sun is out or sweatshirts if it is till cold. Happy Monday! It is so nice to be back in the classroom with your children. I have missed them so much. Thank you for all of your prayers last week while I was away on Jr. High retreat. It was a beautiful way to dive deeper as we begin Lent. I pray that this Lenten season is one of great reflection for all of us as we prepare for Christ's death and Resurrection. Throughout Lent, Saint James Academy participates in a "Lenten Journey". One that helps to prepare our hearts more fully. Each Friday we pray and reflect upon the Stations of the Cross in a new way. I will be sending out dates where we will participate in various activities. We would love to have you.
This Friday, our 2nd grade will be leading mass. I sent home mass parts last week, if your child is doing the welcome, reading or petitions please make sure to practice with them. We would love for you to join us!
A big thanks to all of you who attending the Gala this weekend. It's such a wonderful event that brings everyone together. Your support of our school, parish and students is so appreciated. It was so nice to see so many of you there! I'm looking forward to my teacher date at the bowling alley.
Our Zoo Field trip is next Thursday! We will be leaving the classroom around 8:30 to get the program on time. We will depart the Zoo at 2:00pm getting back in time for dismissal. Your child should come to school in uniform and comfortable walking shoes. Feel free to send in sunscreen or a hat if the sun is out or sweatshirts if it is till cold. Students should bring a disposable lunch as we will not have anywhere to store our items. Thanks to those of you who volunteered to chaperone. If you were one of the first 6 to get your slips in, I will be emailing you later today with further information. Looking forward to a great trip!
Animal Reports- The students are working hard on their animal reports in class. We will be finishing our illustrations, publishing our writing and turning them into iBooks in the next two weeks. When I get a better idea of our estimated finishing date, I will send out an invitation for you to come view their finished work! I am so proud of each and every one of them.
Literature Circles- We are beginning Literature Circles in 2nd grade. Students will be working in small groups to read through an assigned book. They will work together to answer comprehension questions, lead discussions and participate in jobs/roles. We modeled this as a full class when we completed Mouse & The Motorcycle. I'm excited to allow them to work independently on this new project. It is important that students are in class as they are part of a group!

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend! We are coming to the end of February and diving deep into learning here in 2nd grade. Students are working on their first research projects, their animal reports, in class. They are learning to read, take notes, make outlines and turn their outlines into strong paragraphs. The students are also working on their art skills by illustrating their reports. We look forward to sharing them with you! All their hard work will pay off when we head to our Zoo Field Trip on March 21st. Permission Slips will go home on Monday. We would love to have you join us! Chaperones will be taken on a first come first serve basis. Thanks!
Thank you to the Battenfield, Horvath and Roper family for filling our Valentine's Day with special treats! This week as we celebrate Valentine's Day let us be reminded of God's unconditional love for us in our lives. Let our love be a reflection of His perfect love and let us work to spread that love to those we meet.
I apologize for not getting a Homework sheet out yesterday, it will be in your child's folder today! It's nice to be back in the classroom. Thank you so much for all of your love and prayers, I am thankful for the ability to be in Colorado with my family this past weekend for my grandmothers funeral.
Valentine's Day is this week. 2nd grades supports Veronica's Home. Reminder, you do not need to wrap the gifts anymore, as we are focusing on our green initiative. Thank you for your support in this wonderful organization. Please see additional info on the document below:

The doors to the school will open at 6:30p.m. Please drop your child off in the 2nd grade classroom IN COSTUME and head to the church. Costumes were sent home today! Students do not need to wear uniforms under their costumes, but please choose clothing that is appropriate, and not seen from under the costume. If you have any questions, let me know, otherwise I look forward to seeing them all as saints again! Room moms may come into the classroom to help organize, but all other parents should head to the church to get a seat. The show typically lasts an hour and a half. All students should stay with me at the end of the show. We will head to the classroom to be picked up by their parents. Costumes should be taken home that night, washed and returned to school after the New Year. We are looking forward to a reverent production by the entire student body. Don't forget to complete and turn in your Advent Kindness Calendar. The students who complete these and turn them in will get a special prize from me. They can be turned in before we leave for Christmas break!
Our Polar Express party is this Friday, December 21st. Please send your child to school IN MASS UNIFORMS with their pajamas in their backpacks. After mass we will change into our pajamas and watch the movie. Parents will be serving students throughout the movie (like cineopolis), so the more volunteers the merrier that day. We look forward to another great year! If you signed up, please remember to drop off your items before or after mass!
*** Students do not need to bring anything else to school besides their pajamas. (They will be taking their Christmas presents home that day as well)
After Christmas Break students will be diving into our unit on Immigration in Social Studies. They will be learning about various cultures and traditions around the world. During this time, students will look into their own family trees, history and traditions. They will be completing a project throughout the month of January all about their ancestors country of origin. While the students will not begin this project until after break, I know many of them will be spending time with grandparents and family over the holidays. It might be a great opportunity for them to ask their relatives about their heritage, culture and traditions. I look forward to learning all about them as well!

Thank you for helping celebrate Mr. Powell this morning at our morning assembly. His dedication to this school and to our students is amazing and all of your attendance/participation helped for him to feel this even more. We are so thankful for all he has done for our school. Thanks for sending him off with such a great farewell, I know he will be greatly missed, but hopefully still seen from time to time.
The students are running around outside quite a bit and getting extra sweaty during soccer practices. The kids are at the age when many of them will begin to need deodorant to help keep them dry throughout the day. It would be a great time to begin checking your child to see if they need to apply it. Try checking them at the end of the school day. Thanks for helping to keep them clean and smelling great!
A December kindness calendar went home last week. Please encourage your child to complete these kindness challenges/acts throughout the season. The students who complete these and turn them in will get a special prize from me. They can be turned in before we leave for Christmas break. Great job Cate and Giana for already filling up your calendar with acts of kindness!

Welcome to December and the start of this beautiful Advent season. This morning Charlotte Leo (our youngest Kinder student) lit the first purple candle on our school's advent wreath. I pray that this season is one of fruitful growth and reflection. I think often of how our lives become so routine with all that we have going on. Our faith too can become routine. What a blessing it is to be given seasons such as Advent to refresh our faith journeys. I pray that as you await the birth of Christ that your hearts are led further into relationship with him and the miracle that is his birth.

December is my favorite time here at St. James Academy. Our Kindness elf, Olaf, has joined the classroom today. He will be helping to keep an eye on us and remind us that Jesus wants us to be kind. I look forward to a fun month with him in our classroom!
A December kindness calendar will be going home today. Please encourage your child to complete these kindness challenges/acts throughout the season. The students who complete these and turn them in will get a special prize from me. They can be turned in before we leave for Christmas break.

The Christmas Pageant is one of my favorite parts of the season. We are working on the song Ideo. It's a beautiful song but it is difficult. Please help by having your child sing along as we prepare. Book Club- We are half way through our Book Club on The Mouse and the Motorcycle. The students are learning how to read together as a group, discuss what is happening in the chapters, make predictions, infer the themes and plots and work together as a group. We are loving the book and time together. In the spring students will work in groups and complete more independent Book Clubs. Working on this together now will help them to prepare for their independent work in the near future.

"Advent is beginning on December 2nd..... Each year the Catholic Church gives us an incredible opportunity for a powerful encounter with Jesus. In her genius, the Church invites us during Advent to take a step back and look at who we are, what we are doing, and where Jesus fits into our lives.
Jesus came into this world at that first Christmas for you, to bring meaning and deep satisfaction into your life, to fill you with lasting joy, and ultimately to bring you to eternal happiness with him in heaven. That’s what we celebrate at Christmas. Are you ready?
The Definition of Advent
The word “advent” (the arrival of an important person or thing) is derived from the Latin word “adventus,” which means “coming.” For Catholics, Advent is the four-week season leading up to Christmas. During Advent we anticipate the coming of Jesus. It’s a time full of reflection, excitement, and hope."

Happy Monday! I am looking forward to this busy but fun week. Thank you to all of you who helped out at our Halloween Carnival this past Friday. An extra shout out to Mr. Brzezinski who covered our jumpy house booth for over an hour! You are amazing. I saw many happy faces all around campus on Friday, so thank you for your part in making our day successful.
Our Pumpkin Patch field trip is tomorrow! We are planning to leave the classroom by 8:50am on October 30th and will return before lunch! Thank you to Mr. Horvath, Mr. & Mrs. Brzezinski, Mr. Kimberlain and Mr. Breen for volunteering to come. If you could arrive on campus by 8:30 we will divide the students into your groups and head out around 8:45.
Halloween is on Wednesday! Are you looking for somewhere to donate the extra candy your children collect? Each year students are asked to donate a part of their Halloween candy and share it with the poor. SJA will share its collected candy in several ways. Some of the donated candy will be used for the Christmas distribution at the Casa de los Pobres (House of the Poor) in Mexico. Donations of toothbrushes and toothpaste are also welcome. Please deliver your donations to the SJA front office. Thanks for sharing!
All Saints Day is on Thursday. Here's the tentative schedule for the day. All are free to join for any of the above. Please arrive at school IN COSTUME (WITH UNIFORMS ON UNDERNEATH).
7:40-Please arrive at the church NO LATER than 7:40am!
8:00- Mass
9:00- Group photo on the altar
9:15-9:30 - Quick snack/break
9:30-9:45- Saint Doll Crafts in the classroom
10:15-11:00 Students will record their Saint Reports for our green screen project.
Saint reports are due today. Please make sure you are practicing these at home with your child. They should be able to read them fluidly for their report presentation.
Costumes went home last week. They will need be washed and ironed prior to All Saint's Day. Feel free to add additional props (staff, bible, rosary, cross, shell, ect.) and/or pieces to the costume. You can look online to get a better idea of what the saint may have worn during their day.
If you already have a costume and do not plan to use this one, please just send this back in and let me know.
It is important to bring the costumes back IN A ZIP LOCKED bag! Please bring them back washed and ready to go before we go on Thanksgiving break. The children will wear these again during the Christmas pageant so it's important to keep them organized.
A huge thank you to Joshua for collecting gift cards for the classroom this year instead of birthday presents. What a sweet and generous gift. Last week Josh helped me to pick out several new STEM and Math games that all of the students can enjoy throughout the year. We are looking forward to using them!
Parent/Teacher Conference sign ups will go home this Friday. Please make sure to sign up for a time to meet with me. I look forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your child's strengths and how to best assist them throughout the rest of the year!

We are jumping back into our normal Language Arts curriculum this week after taking a week off for our assessments. During that week, students participated in a thematic unit about bats, built upon the book Stellaluna. Check out what they learned about bats in our picture above.
We are wrapping up our science unit on matter, forces and magnetism. Students will receive a study guide at the end of this week. Their first science test will be next Tuesday, the 23rd. Please be on the lookout for their study guides!

Last weeks students worked hard to better understand arrays. As a final project to the lesson, students made an Array City full of various arrays (see the picture above). Check it out in the hallway outside of 2nd grade. They did a fabulous job!

A decade of the Rosary, led by Student Council Members will be said after Friday morning masses during the month of October in honor of Respect Life month.
All Saints Day- Thank you all for getting your saint sheets in. If you and your child did not submit a saint sheet, they selected a saint in class. If your saint was on the list I will be sending home an information sheet on that saint today to help give a simple outline of their life along with an outline sheet to help your child gather information before they write their report. Please reference the All Saints Day packet for guidelines. Also, saints can be a delicate subject as some had difficult lives and deaths. It is important that you are a part of their research to help them weed through this information. There is a sample of the report on my website under projects if you would like to see one! Here is the link:
radcliffesclass.weebly.com/saint-report.html
We also will be completing a green screen project of the reports. You can see previous years here: radcliffesclass.weebly.com/all-saints-day-greenscreen.html. As you can see, students will be reading their reports. Please practice with them as the day approaches.

October Reading Logs have begun. Make sure to record your child's reading on their forms. They will be turned in on Friday November 2nd!
Great for all families who will be participating in sacraments this year!:
Calling all Families!
Our Parish Faith Nights are not just for adults and teens. We have a program for children of all ages! Your children will be taught about the Mass, at their level, so they can more fully appreciate attending Mass on Sunday.
Starting October 2nd, our parish will be hosting an 8-week study of the Mass on Tuesday evenings. We are expanding our Adult Study to include teens and youth. We are calling it Parish Faith Nights and it is for everyone here in our St. James-St. Leo community.
In addition to the Adult Study, our Youth Study is for 6th grade and up, our Children’s Study is for Kindergarten through 5th, and childcare will be provided. Our Confirmation prep class will also kick off their year studying the Mass with us. We welcome our older post-confirmation teens to either study with the adults, or work with the children. And because Jesus loved sharing a meal with his friends, each session will begin with supper, a home-cooked nutritious meal for just $5 per person.
The last evening of the study will be a teaching Mass with our pastor Fr. Gerard and Dcn. Peter, with supper afterwards. This is an opportunity for us as a parish to open our hearts and better understand and appreciate what we celebrate at Mass.
How to Sign Up- 1) You can sign up by sending an email to [email protected] with the following information: Names and grades of all participants, and a phone number. 2)You can drop off or send in a check to St. James, 625 S. Cookies for Kairos drop off- before and after school on Friday 10/12 Kairos is a Christian Retreat designed for prison inmates. It is held twice a year at RJ Donovan State Prison in San Ysidro. About 100 prisoners are invited to take part in the retreat each time. As you can imagine, for many of the men in the prison, Jesus Christ and Christianity are far from their minds. To encourage them to attend, we tell them that they will get to eat as many homemade cookies as they like! Often, this is the only reason that they come. But once we have them on the retreat, we treat them with respect and dignity, and watch the Holy Spirit change their hearts. And yes, they can eat as many of your cookies as they like! The retreat goes for 4 days, and we also like to give out cookies to the prison guards and the staff, and if we have enough, we give some to all of the other prisoners in the name of Jesus. That's a lot of cookies - 4 thousand dozen!! Please help.

This Thursday we will be honoring St. Francis with our annual Blessing of the Animals. This beautiful event takes place Thursday afternoon at 2:30pm. Please meet us outside of the classroom with your pets as we head to the basketball courts. **** Halloween Carnival sign ups are in my sign up genius. With our small class it is important that each family signs up for a slot. We need two people for every half hour (1 per station). Thank you!
Nardo Dr., Solana Beach, CA 92075, or you can pay the first night. Scholarships and payment plans are available, and we do appreciate donations for scholarships. Fees are as follows:
